About Point Light Gallery:


Point light was established in 1996 in Sydney, Australia by Lyndell and Gordon Undy. The intention of gallery was to foster the appreciation and creation of fine black and white photographs through gallery and workshops / darkroom program.
After several years of increasingly successful workshops and exhibitionsthe emphasis is now on the gallery where you will see a selection of Australian and international masterworks.




History:


Point light gallery was established  to show and sell the work of artists who use traditional monochrome photographic media. Just as one can appreciate the way Winslow Homer or Norman Lindsay used the glowing transparency and freedom of watercolor, so visitors go to point light should be able to see the way artists employ the full tonal, textural and emotional qualities of black and white photography.
 Besides the gallery point light has a fully equipped studio and darkroom where occasional master classes in the use of film and photograph making are conducted and where a number of Australia's finest photographic artists work.






Many photographers can make some outstanding photographs but only few number of them can offer an output which is ongoing integrity of vision. Good photographs are invariably made by artists with an understanding of their personal center, and an empathy with both the medium and the subject.This is a rare combination but it always be something we seek in choosing our exhibitors at point light.

The gallery special in monochrome work, being one level of abstraction from the world of color that inspires the viewer to make greater demands on his or her imagination and open a pathway to their soul. The viewer brings as much to the photograph as the photograph brings to the viewer.

My favorite photo

This is my favorite picture, one of those amazing photos by Gordon Undy. If you have a careful look at this picture, if you have been Sydney, if you have be central station, and you will find it actually is the big clock located in central station. Unfortunately the big clock is keeping in repair at the moment. I am not sure when could we see it again.

The reason i like it is the first stuff when i came here, Sydney. It looks like the Big Ben in England, and it is charm and glamour, it is old and cultural, it is a symbolize building in old style just as world square in modern style.  It makes me feel familiar. And i get used to be same rather than change.

 Look at the picture, if you do not know it is a photography by camera, you will think it as a watercolor picture. The gallery special in monochrome work, and so this picture is. Actually I prefer any colorful picture such as pop art work. Black and white is absolutely classic, but they are a little bit boring if you stay them a long time, you know, we need refresh, and breathy again and again, at least for young people, colorful pictures are more popular, even for cloth, living stuffs, mobile phone, or car and so on. But in Gordon's work, you would find a color gradient, for example, in this picture, it is most black part at the bottom, and as look down and up, it change to white more and more.

Everyone is the viewer when you have a look at this picture, include the person who create it. In my opinion, there are few of stuff in, and you can see lots of trees first of all, and bridge, and the big old clock, all of them look so quite.  Black and white is the main color used in the photo. From the photo, I can see that is a winter, everything is during hibernation. Even birds were hiding at the moment. Anyway it shows me a quite, familiar, and perfect angle about photography.

The other thing is, Gordon Undy, the creator of the photo, has passion attitude in life, and always insistence in art, never stop. From his words, i think he must be proud of his achievements. That is good. In China, there is a proverb, someone who feels contentment always be happy. People living should be happy and joyful, but not painful and sad during life time. Gordon Undy, the first impression he given us is a happiness and wisdom person, and politeness. He likes learning, and he likes learning languages, i remember that day, he asked us to teach him some Chinese word, and he really has the talent in language.


How well is advertised the event was
Well, in my opinion, it is not really that good. It is a photography show, about art. But it is not as popular as music or fashion show. And it is a small scale gallery, no entry fees, no security, only Gordon there when we visited. Thus I still like it, the style, the decoration, as a small gallery, full fill with cultural. It needs more publicity, but that would be commercialized easily, and lost its original style. So even the advertisement is not success, just leave it, the Point Light does not need honor, it should be the one it should be.


Who the event is targeted towards
In my opinion, the targeted would be somebody enthusiasm in photography. It has no difference about age and vocation, it is about hobby. They have a same goal, all of them like photograph. So the event mostly towards those photo fans. Besides of these, some old people would be the targets, they need some interesting stuff to spend time, because they do not need work. And businessman work on photograph would be a part of target too. Their business based on photograph technical skills and equipments. A good photo studio would like to improve itself as fast as they can, and collect more technical skills in taking photo.


What kind of people attended the event
That is a hard question, first of all, it is photography, and we can touch stuff in life, it is normal, nothing special. The destination would be enjoy and just for fun, or just have a look to waste time. Not only adult may interested in photography, but same like teenagers and the older. The audience would be student, officer, housewife, businessman and artist. Someone really likes photography, such as photographers, artists and so on. Also student would attend the event, like us, do assignment that research any interesting event.

Discuss your own observations of the event
Here, i would like to discuss the gallery. It is a small gallery stayed in an old unit. It takes us around 30min to find. It locates in a quiet and narrow road near Elizabeth St. Even the house number, is not clear presented. The stairs go upstairs are also narrow, a little squeeze when two people go at the same time. Click the light green door, an old man open the door with smile, very kindly. Then a small clean and tidy gallery will catch your eyes. Everything just hangs on the white wall, vary tidiness. Gordon Undy introduced the gallery carefully for us, and asked us to have a look around by ourselves. It has a fully equipped studio and darkroom, and everything done with hand as you can see in work area. 

Discuss your own opinion of the event including likes and dislikes
The important thing i would like to highlight here is the mood Gordon Undy had, the enthusiasm in art, the passion in life, the desire in learning. I guess he is about 55years old, but he still keeps his dream in heart. That is the important thing i lost, now i have no idea about future, i do not know what should i do, what i want to do, i have no dream, no pursue, no goal. Mr Undy has been many places around world, and took lots of photo in his life. At the end, he showed us his family, everyone looks so happy, well, that is really a nice and felicity family. Well, i should think about lots of things......
About this event, it is hard to say something i dislike. Everything is so fantasitic and amazing. Well, the only thing i forgot is took a photo with Mr Undy, that is the only thing i dislike.

About Dadaism

The cultural movement started in Zurich, Switzerland from 1916 to 1922.

Dadaism purposed to express anti-war, anti-bourgeois and anarchistic in nature by rebuilding any tropical art work. They divided different cultural works into a new one, and show us its new concept about anti-war or anti-bourgeois.Besides of these, Dadaism also influenced music, poetry,visual arts and graphic design. For example, later styles like surrealism, pop and punk rock.

What is my opinion

In my opinion, dadaisms advocate for the arts should be like a bomb, once killed, and should be disappearanced, not a single on this planet, and they insist on negate everything, destroy everything and overthrowing everything, these stuffs also show us a nihilist of a specific views. In addition, dadaism reflects the first world war to western some young people the anguish and blank of a state of mind.

What is my own opinion

Broken, cracked, and parse regroup, just like in a puzzle, with one is regroup the pieces of patterns to express the central idea. From a number of cubism works we can see, the object to all angles to the vertical and horizontal lines, which showed a style of a two-dimensional perspective.

In topography, the angle made by two ground lines is measured horizontally, and is called a horizontal angle. Horizontal angles are usually expressed in degrees. A full circle is divided into 360 degrees, abbreviated as 360°.  Let's look at the picture. the line called "x", we can act it as horizontal angle, and line "y" is vertical angle. In fact, there is no absolute vertical or horizontal angle, just because of the angle what you are looking at the moment. So there must be a reference when you look at something.

EXAMPLE and My opinion

 

Frontal, involved

This is a direct gaze from Audrey Hepburn. When you see it , you feel like that she is looking at you as well and you are involved at the moment. As a viewer, maybe we are talking, chatting. Anyway, i feel comfortable and relax from Audrey's eye contact.

 

Oblique, detached

Here is a another picture about Audrey Hepburn. But it is an indirect gaze. I feel kind of detachment betweenmy own and represented participant in this picture. I just like a bystander, she is wearing her earing, may be making up in ladies room. And she has no idea who is looking at her.  I think what oblique meaning is as a spectator to view the environment around you.

Freedom

the Statue of Liberty from USA, as we know, it is a gift from France to America, it hold high the torch just like saying"FREEDOM".

 

Power

This is also really popular all over the world. And it comes from Egypt. In ancient Egypt, Pharoah grasp the high right in the country. So that is why i choose this pic.

 

Man

Toilet sign, in every public rest room, you can find this pic on the door of toilet. May be a little bit different, but they say the same word "Male toilet". 

 

Woman 

As same as "Male toilet", this pic say"Female toilet".

 

Symbolism- My work

Absolute:  the word"p" in the middle means "parking", you know, in many public places there are not lots of spaces for parking, some of them limited people to parkingin carpark, so i get inspiration from this situation. And the sign means "no parking here". I think "absolute" similar with exactly, but not too strong as "exactly".

Infinite/Infinity: this sign looks like the environment protection symbol, yes, that is what i want to say. Just as environment, we should always keep our earth clear to survive generation by generation. That is a heavy work and we could not stop it. I use green because it is a health color, represent fresh and hope. You can see that arrows are directing the others before it, never stop.

Blind: i really have no idea about this one. Finally i think about the letter "b", i'm not sure if it is work. but it is simple and darkness enough, normally there are two holes inside letter "b", and i fill dark in them, so that looks like the letter has no eyes, it could not see anything any more.
